Saturniidae

Boisduval, 1837

The Saturniidae are a family of Lepidoptera that includes over 2.300 species. *
They are present in all continents but their diffusion is developed above all in tropical and subtropical regions. They are large moths even if some species are small.
Adults are characterized by large lobed wings, heavy bodies covered with hair-like scales, and little or not functional. The hind wings overlap the front wings to produce the effect of an uninterrupted wing surface. **
Some of the largest moths in the world belong to this family, reaching almost 300 mm wingspan in some species.
The Saturnia pyri , a species belonging to this family, is the largest European moth.
